Work for induction coil pick-up and laptop. (2011)
It's been said that the audience can't tell whether laptop artists are playing music or checking their email on stage. So, in 3coil I do just that: mundane computer tasks like check my email and browse photos with iPhoto and turn it into music. The sound is produced by "listening into" the electromagnetic interference from the laptop itself while doing these tasks. I use a special type of microphone called an induction coil pickup--originally designed to record telephone conversations in the days of rotary phones. These microphones are placed on or near the laptop during it's normal operation and reveal the cacophony of electronic noise hidden inside the computer.
The score for 3coil is below the video.
