Bill of Lading

Bill of Lading (2017- )

This work is composed of a list of visual and sonic images that have been extracted from Amazonia, Brazil. The work is completed with the formal acknowledgement of receipt (the “bill of lading”) from the gallery or institution where the work is installed. It is the formal exchange and acknowledgement that highlights the complicity of both the artist and the gallery in the extraction of the "goods" (images and sounds) from their native location.

In this way, it is structurally designed to demonstrate and acknowledge that the work is composed of things that are not my own, that these images and sounds have been extracted from some place else, without anyone's permission, and used to generate value abroad without consequence. Thus the work is designed to problematize the notion of goods and, by extension, objecthood.
