Radio Free Gowanus
Radio Free Gowanus (2014 - )
“Broadcasting from the bottom of the canal…”
A pop-up pirate FM radio station dedicated to artists, activists, and meeting your neighbors.
I had a studio in Gowanus, Brooklyn for about 10 years. During the Gowanus Open Studios every year, I would set up a pirate radio station and broadcast during the weekend. People came in an chatted with me and requested songs, participated in random shows, and reported on their lives and livelihoods. I learned a lot about my neighbors during those years.
Eventually, I partnered with Interference Archive and continued an activist-focused series at their events with the same model of having people off the street on the show.
The project is now more of an archive of pop-up events than a podcast. While I no longer have a studio in Gowanus, RFG lives on as pop-up pirate radio station from time to time.
